The Writer - Dennis Desmond
I consider myself to be an animal welfarist . I strongly believe that if humans have a responsibility to the planet and all of the life on it. I am saddened and disappointed by people who believe the Earth and everything on it is merely theirs for the taking. We have a greater responsibility to act as caretakers for all living things on this planet and to take responsibility for our actions so that the web of life may survive intact for future generations.

Unfortunately, care information for many species now being imported is lacking, while information that exists for many others is so wrong that it would benefit those species if the information did not exist at all. I have little or no respect for dealers and breeders who are out for the almighty buck and care little or nothing for the animals under their care. These dealers fail to learn basic taxonomy and ignore the habitat and environmental needs of their animals - I believe this is wrong. Dealers have a responsibility to both the buyer and the animals they breed and sell.

All new animal keepers make mistakes. Having spent more than five years at the National Zoo I have even seen experienced keepers make mistakes - we all do it. But I believe that it is the responsibility of experienced keepers and breeders to inform and educate others and provide as much information as possible so that the newcomers will avoid the mistakes we made. Information should be free and be made available - that is why I created this website.
