Species Description

Dusty Hognose (Heterodon nasicus gloydi)

You've probably been wondering where the information on the Dusty Hognose is...
Actually, it wasn't so much that I forgot as that I concur with Curtis Eckerman's assessment that H. n. gloydi is not a valid subspecies.
Based on his studies and comparisons of the range of Heterodon nasicus throughout the Great plains and southcentral United States, it appears that Edgren's original assumptions were in error.
There appears to be no validity to the claim that there is a subspecific difference in either azygous scales, dorsal blotches, or ocular scales between H. n. nasicus and H. n. gloydi. Rather, it appears that H. n. gloydi simply exhibits range variations both from a west to east axis as well as a south to north axis.
