Species Sheets for Heterodon, Leioheterodon, and Lystrophis

Provided in this section are detailed taxonomic species accounts of the various species of "hognosed snakes" found throughout the world. Identified as having enlarged rear teeth (Xenodontidae) and upturned rostral scales, this group of snakes are remotely related and may represent parallel evolutionary development rather than any direct link between the species.

The three genera are defintely popular among hobbyists and hognosed colubrids play a large part in the herpetofaunal hobby worldwide. The groups are divided roughly into 4 groups: the American hognosed snakes which are rear fanged and occupy most of the United States except for the northwest; the South American tricolored hognose snakes, also known as the false coral snakes; the Neotropical hognosed snakes or false yararas; and the Malagasy hognosed snakes.

Each species description includes basic taxonomic data as agreed to by field experts and provide historical references where appropriate.

Three specific notes of interest to hobbyists and field researchers:

1. The specific name of the Eastern hognosed snake is determined to be spelled "platirhnos" not "platyrhinos" due to an earlier taxonomic error;

2. The existence of the subspecific unit "gloydi" (Dusty hognosed snake) of the western hognosed snake (Heterodon nasicus) group is considered to be merely a range variation of the Plains and not a separate subspecies;

3. The majority of South American tricolored hognosed snakes are taxonomixally identified as either Lystrophis pulcher or Lystrophis matogrossensis and NOT as Lystrophis semicinctus as previously identified by retailers and hobbyists.
