South American Hognosed Group (Lystrophis species) |
These two very poorly known and seldom studied species are restricted to the central Argentina to Brazil and to Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is believed that they are mimics of Bothrops and Waglerophis species also found in this region.
They are collectively referred to as false coral snakes in their native region and also as false coral-cobras.
Due to their rarity and their protected status in the countries where they are found, both Lystorphis histricus and Lystrophis nattereri are seldom found in collections outside their native region. With the recent work done by Doctors G. J. Scrocchi and F. B. Cruz at the Instituto de Herpetologica, Republica Argentina, more is becoming known about their ranges, habitats and habits.
Taxonomic data provided represents what is currently known about these species.
Under the Care Sheet section you will information on the care and breeding of South American and Neotropical hognosed snakes. |
